About Us
A potted history! The Mowat Family.
.jpg.aspx?width=407&height=305)
After selling our Hotel & restaurant in Lincolnshire in 2005 we took a holiday on the Isle of Man - Hired a car and fell in love with the Island and the rest is history as they say.
We, Graham & Joan Mowat with daughter Laura & son Robin bought Tanroagan from local fisherman Butch and moved in, re-opening on April 6th 2006 and cooking for the Hairy Bikers the next evening. With a thriving film industry on the island we have had lots more well known visitors - You just never know who’s going to be sitting on the table next to you.

The Tanroagan Team
The kitchen at Tanroagan is open planned so you can watch the Chefs at work presided over by Head Chef Richard Birch. Married to a Manx girl, with a baby boy, he’s had lots of experience in London fish Restaurant Leiths and Kenningston Place where he was manager of the fishmongers section. Second Chef John Paul Connor makes up the kitchen team with a little help from me (Joan) from time to time. Front of House - Laura, with a hospitality degree from Sheffield Hallum, Bara & Dawn our Assistant manager (on maternity leave to have her first baby)
We absolutely love Tanroagan, what we do, what we stand for and have great pride in our work. You will always have a warm welcome & goodbye and we hope that you enjoy Tanroagan as much as we do!
Accessibility
If you, or one of your party are a wheelchair user, we recommend you check with the restaurant directly regarding access before booking. There is parking immediately outside and the restaurant is on the ground floor, however unfortunately there are 3 steps leading up to the toilets.
We welcome families at Tanroagan however we ask that young children stay seated during their meal due to the limited space in the restaurant and the close proximity to other diners. We have coloring pencils and paper on hand to keep them entertained, just ask one of our team! We do not have a separate childrens menu, however we can do small (plain) portions of most of the dishes on the menu. The freshly Battered fish fingers and homemade chips normally go down very well! Unfortunately we do not have any high chairs, however please feel free to bring along yours if you need too.
Taste Isle of Man

Tanroagan is proud to have been accredited by 'Taste Isle of Man', a new quality assessment scheme for restaurants, pubs, take aways and other eateries is being introduced on the Isle of Man. This comes following the huge success of similar schemes, operated by Taste Lancashire in the UK, which have already been highly acclaimed following coverage in the Times and Telegraph newspapers and several lifestyle magazines.

The scheme is based on a completely independent assessment taking place and provides the consumer with a clear indication of quality. The trained assessors have considered every aspect of the customer experience including cleanliness, hospitality, service, efficiency, presentation and food quality.
In addition, establishments are assessed on the use and promotion of local produce and those achieving a quality score over 60% are awarded the ‘Harvest Isle of Man’ accolade.
The Minister for Tourism and Leisure said:
‘We are all familiar with the star ratings for hotels and guest houses, which are designed to help visitors decide which accommodation will best suit their needs. In contrast, restaurants, pubs and other eateries can be chosen at random by customers and may not always prove to be the right choice for them. The Department of Tourism and Leisure recognises the importance of the food and drink industry to the Island and for this reason we felt it was time to introduce a scheme which provided a degree of reassurance to visitors planning their meal.
‘The Department of Tourism and Leisure is regularly asked to suggest or recommend dining options to tourists and currently we are unable to provide details due to impartiality of Government and the subjective nature of food. The award scheme is a great idea and will enable us to work alongside the eateries to help promote them to visitors and residents alike. It will also hopefully encourage all food outlets to raise standards and when customers see the ‘Quality Assured’ signs they can expect a certain level of service.’
